Operations Manager

Direct reports: Assistant Operations Managers; control room team including Duty Managers, Night Supervisors, Service supervisors, Network Supervisors and Allocations

Reading buses is one of Reading’s largest employers with 580 employees and 192 buses delivering 72,500 passenger journeys each day. With Reading’s brand new railway station, electrification, CrossRail, new Park & Rides and our ongoing investment in the latest buses and technology, the region is on the cusp of a transport revolution and we’re looking for an Operations Manager to be a part of it!

Reporting to the Head of Operations you will drive continuous improvement in our operational delivery and driver management through a state of the art control facility, you’ll be an excellent communicator with a proven track record in operations. You’ll lead and inspire our people and take advantage of the latest technology to revolutionise operational delivery and deliver the best possible service to our customers.

Your key focus will be leading our control room team to optimise operational performance and customer service delivery through a team of Operational Duty Managers and driver managing Assistant Operations Managers. You’ll additionally have lead responsibility for overseeing our Newbury based operation.

An attractive salary will be offered for the right candidate and there is additional scope for a relocation package.

Job Purpose

To ensure safe, legal and efficient operation of our services
To provide leadership to operational control and service delivery, driver management and allocations teams

Principal accountabilities
Take full ownership of the operations delivery function to continue its development to meet the growing challenges of Reading and customer expectations
Take the lead in managing and overseeing the Newbury based operation
Take the lead in the management of driver performance 
To motivate, inspire, mentor and manage their team to deliver high standards of operational delivery and customer satisfaction
Ensure delivery of operations KPIs
Ensure timely and accurate production of operational reporting
Contribute to the wider strategy of the business
Foster a collaborative relationship with the Trade Union
Contribute to making Reading Buses aspiration to be not only the best bus operator in the UK but also a great place to work

Person specification
Bus operations experience – service control structure and strategy and delivering to the usual KPIs 
People management and leadership - a cultural fit with Reading Buses in terms of communication, engagement, motivation and empowerment
Customer service – a passion for high standards of service delivery and presentation. Clear evidence of attention to detail
Experience of dealing with Trade Unions and formal people management/performance improvement processes
IT and technology – experience of GPS/tracking/telematics systems and a high degree of IT literacy.
Goes above and beyond – Someone who gets out of their office, sees things from all angles, can empathise with employees, customers and stakeholders. Someone who networks and learns from and shares with others.

Safe and Efficient driving 7 hours. Includes:

  • Eco-friendly driving
  • Accident damage/repair costs

Course costs 1 - 5 drivers £85.00 + VAT per driver per day.
