'Out of this World' Open Day 2018

It's going to be another bumper filled Reading Buses Open Day at our Great Knollys Street depot on Sunday July 1 as we open the doors to our depot once again to help raise lots of money for charity!

This year it's going to be 'Out of this World' - so think aliens, astronauts and other extra-terrestrial activities. All we have to do now is planet!

when and where?

The event starts at 11am and runs until 4pm - don't forget to stay until the end to watch the colourful cavalcade of buses as they do a 'lap of honour' around the town centre!

It takes place at our depot at Great Knollys Street, RG1 7HH - but remember there is no parking, so please walk or use the free shuttle bus. The free shuttle bus runs between the depot and town starting at 10.30am. Buses will run along Friar Street, Station Road and Blagrave Street. They will stop at Friar Street FJ, Station Road SC, Blagrave Street EO and then Friar Street FP in the town centre.

The last bus from the depot will depart at 4pm.

what's on?

It's going to be an action-packed day, with a fun out of this world theme! The yard will be split into 'worlds' to help you navigate around - the programme will be published closer to the day showing you a little map of where things are and in what 'world.'

fancy dress for kids

But that's not the end of the theme - we want the little ones to have even more fun by dressing up for a fancy-dress competition! Open to children 11 and under, get them dressed up in a suitably out of this world outfit and they could win a great space prize! The competition will be judged by our Chief Executive Officer, Martijn Gilbert, at 12.30pm by the Autism Berkshire bus. All children who dress up will get a small prize too. Adults and older children are encouraged to dress up, but unfortunately will not be eligible to win the prize!

The day is also a chance for you to come down to our depot, look around our buses and see behind the scenes as well as having fun playing games and enjoying all the wonderful food!

Have a look at just some of the things going on below:

  • Go behind the scenes on our Workshop tour, Control Room tour or our Tech Lab Innovation Centre tour - remember to book early on the day as our tours are very popular and fill up quick!
  • Open Top bus tour (subject to weather obviously!)
  • Ride through the bus wash - our most popular attraction for the little ones (and big kids too!)
  • See your name up in lights on the front of a bus
  • Face painting
  • Check out our colourful and iconic buses in the bus rainbow
  • Visit the Autism Berkshire bus and learn about their work
  • See vintage buses from a bygone era
  • Feed yourself (and family and friends) - BBQ, curry, snacks, cakes, ice cream and candy floss
  • Buy Reading Buses memorabilia
  • Games - including the football shootout
  • Tombola and raffle
  • Star Wars characters
  • Trolley Bus film
  • And more!

how much is it?

It's completely free to get in! You just have to pay for any activities you do when you are there.

Everything is reasonably priced to allow you to have a great day out for not much money, and all the profits raised on the day go to our Charity of the Year, Autism Berkshire.
